Hello, i'm using an i5 6500, gigabyte g170x gaming 7 mobo, 16g ddr4 ram, and im trying to SLI my two gtx 970's. I checked that both cards work, but when I try to use them through my pcie8x slot, i get no display. If i go into my bios and change my primary pcie slot, I still get no display. Eventually, my display will run in super low resolution (but my graphics card is still not detected)
Any ideas? Is my pcie slot dead?

Just a thought, what kind of SLI bridge are you using? With ribbon(s) it's usually a pretty simple thing but I found out when using the new HB style bridges if they don't get proper contact seating strange things can happen. Also make sure both cards have all their power connectors hooked up.

You might want to try reversing the cards as a test but still connecting your display to the primary. SLI, despite it complicated reputation, is usually a pretty simple setup(optimized games are another story).

Checklist:
1. Both cards are properly plugged into board-not fully in and it won't be recognized, too hard and you can break the connectors.
2. Both cards need their power connectors hooked up, neither card is capable of running off bus power.
3. SLI bridge on the correct port. If using ribbon one will do but two doesn't hurt. If using the newer solid style HB bridges it may take an almost uncomfortable amount of force to get it properly seated. It did with my two 970's and 1080's. I was kind of aggrevated how much effort it took to get that right. With this be very careful, I really didn't like how much force it took to get it right and was terrified of breaking something. With the 970's I really just recommend using ribbon(s).
4. Display connections. My own experience has shown you can connect to either card but only the one dedicated as primary should have anything connected when in SLI. To keep it simple just stick to card 1.
5. Verification's and configuring NV CP for SLI.

I admit I was tired and forgot to put that on the checklist. Way to go!
I know you're really going to enjoy those 970's in SLI. I had the same, but Gigabyte G1's, running for 2-3 years and loved them. They totally rocked 1080p in ultra for most games, pretty good in 1440p, but needed significant compromises to hold 40-60 consistently in 4k. Overall though they were awesome!
