Hi
I was going to buy a fully new rig next month but yesterday,

Intel's X series was revealed.

So, i7 7740x is in my budget. So should i wait or buy 7700k

and what will be the price for 7740x motherboard ? most of them looks expensive !!!

Solution

Don't really know your budget, but this build should be good. Get the 7700K and a Z270. 16GB of ram should be enough for Photoshop, especially a little. No need to jump on the 7740X and X299 chipset.

NOTE: This is just a quick setup I threw together, not really concrete, but it could still work just fine and deliver amazing results.

CPU: Intel - Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($329.69 @ SuperBiiz)

Yes pretty much Gaming is the 1st priority but little photoshop here and there !!

That worries me !
they are both priced the same ! its confusing
but the motherboard confuses me the most whats their pricing might be !!!

i don´t see a real benefit going i7 7740x over the i7 7700k other than the 100mhz base clock difference and slot diference and no igpu, they are both 4 cores 8 threads turbo boost to 4.5ghz dual channel and 16 pcie lanes imo the x299 mobo is an overkill for the i7 7740x itself i would not get into that platform to use only dual channel memory and 16 pcie lanes that doesnt makes sense to me. 100mhz in base clock is like no difference and you can disable the igpu in the 7700k.

Its almost the same cpu for a more expensive platform you cant take advantage of with the mentioned cpu.

I'm with most people here - Z270 makes way more sense as it'll allow you to get a much cheaper motherboard. If you have a set budget then definitely go 7700k, you'll end up paying quite a bit less for your CPU/mobo combo & those two CPUs will be identical in games, plus you'll get no real benefit from having spent way more on the X299 motherboard. You'll be much better off getting a 7700k, a sensible price motherboard, & the best possible GPU. If you spend the same budget on X299 you'll be stepping down on your GPU & you'll have a worse gaming experience overall.

All that said, if money isn't much of a problem then obviously X299 has an upgrade path whereas the Z270 doesn't really so X299 is the better choice in that situation, but then don't get the 7740x, get something with more cores so it'll last a bit longer.

My advice would be something like the build Herc08 posted above. If you specify a budget people will throw pcpartpicker builds at you until you get one you like :) we love a budget challenge! I'd probably go with a Ryzen 1700 & clock it to 3.8-4.0 personally though, but depends what games you're playing because whilst that'll perform similar enough in most games, there's the odd (usually older) game that's very Intel friendly.

I'd choose the 7700k. It makes no sense to put an i7 7740x into an x299 chipset. This means you'd have to upgrade to a skylake x chip to fully utilize the motherboard to it's full potential. That urks me. Basically everything beyond the z270 and 7700k is intel's "knee jerk" reaction to amd's ryzen and for that reason if my computer were to die today, i'd wait for prices to drop regarding the 7700k then bight the bullet.

For best performance for your uses, dig out the money and get a i7 7800X
No point getting an expensive X299 board and pair with a 4/4 i5 7640X or 4/8 i7 7740X that doesnt even fully utilise the chipsets capabilities. If you were to go for X299, a 6/12 i7 7800X or greater is preferred.

If you would consider AMD for lower cost however, Ryzen 7 1700 + X370 would be better than i7 7740X +X299 at a lower price and get more workstation (your photoshop) performance.

If you would prefer Intel/prioritise gaming performance above workstation performance, go for i7 7700K + Z270. X299 is not good value for 4/4 4/8 CPUs, as I said.

Best workstation performance
i9 7900X + X299 ($1200)
Great overall performance
i7 7800X + X299 ($800) <- Recommended
Best value workstation performance
R7 1700 + X370 ($500)
Best gaming performance
i7 7700K + Z270 ($500)
Best value gaming performance
i5 7600K + Z270 ($400)
R5 1600X + B350 ($350)

Not so sure the 7740's extra 100 MHz base clock will translate to being worth the extra expense....

The 7700K with Noctua NH D15 runs Prime 95 at 71C, Intel's stress test at 60C, and games at 45C...

When/if Ryzen begins to outframe it gaming-wise (in 3 years, my guess), I'll re-evaluate a new rig then :)
