...my parents had me wire their house for data. The configuration consist of a router/modem connected to a switch and on the other side of the house is a router setup as an access point. Most of the time, everything works great. Periodically, the wifi slows to an absolute crawl, effectively stopping, while the rest of the network bumps along being its usual effective and supportive self.

Guess anyone?

Solution
Connections being:

ISP ---> Modem/Router -----> Switch --- house wiring ---> Access Point ~~~~~>wireless devices

Double check your ethernet cables between devices. Swap in known working cables.

Try bypassing different segments; e.g., the switch to narrow down possible problem locations.

Then look at the cable run connections with respect to your data wiring.

May be some loose (intermittent) connection along the way.
