I have an Asrock H81 Pro BTC lying around, accompanied by an i5 4440 and 16gb of ram. As I have no real use for them at the moment, I figured it would be a fun experiment to try and make my first hackintosh. Would these components be compatible? And if not, where can I find more about compatible components?

Solution

It's very simple. A Mac is nothing more, or less, than a modified (at the firmware level) PC. They even run Windows better than standard PC's (at least that's the claim), therefore it has been decreed by site management that as long as the discussion centers around the hardware it is not a violation of any licensing and is permitted. It's only when the conversation turns to how/where to obtain the OS (only legally available to Apple hardware owners), how to install/configure, modifying licensed/copyrighted code to permit use of non apple hardware, etc. that the conversation is shut down.

Now back to the original question...

There is no need for pretentiousness or elitism, as I have seen enough threads on the subject. If you are worried about the profit margin of one of the greediest commercial companies in the world I'll have you know that I have two legit macs in my possession.

Anyone else?

Not pretentious or elite at all. this site has a terms of service and piracy in any way, which hackintosh squarely falls into, is contrary to that. this is not about profit, it is about keeping the Toms Community here helping the community not sued into oblivion by one of the largest most profitable companies who has more lawyers than Toms has fans (cooling fans and fanatics).

try an equally large company like Boogle or Ging.

Discussing the hardware is perfectly fine as Macs are nothing more than glorified PC's. Discussion of how to obtain, install, troubleshoot, etc. the operating system is not permitted. As the question pertained to hardware it is permitted.

PS: If you have a question/problem concerning site rules then raise an alert (bottom right on every post) and let the moderators handle it. Please do not play moderator.

Now back to the original question. Yes, that combination has been reported as working. However, as that's somewhat dated hardware do not expect stellar performance.
