Just started building a new RYZEN setup, however, when i tested it, the CPU fail debug LED lit up on the motherboard, tried multiple power offs and ons, still persisted...

All of the other components on the board work fine, and the mother board looks to be working fine, the lights on it come on, power is supplied to the CPU fan, GPU turns on etc....

However unlike in a normal boot (with a CPU detected) the fans on the GPU spin then stop, whereas in this case they just spin, as if no control is coming through the PCIe slot...

I have tested each component, the GPU works, the RAM works and is on the QVL, the PSU is fine as was in my old build and had no problems, so was the GPU, i cannot however test the CPU as i do not have another AM4 motherboard.

As of currently, i have 2 options, RMA the CPU and MOBO or RMA the CPU only and wait until it has been tested to see if the MOBO is the problem or the CPU. Unfortunately, RMA'ing the CPU will be expensive, and from what i have read, it is more likely an issue with the motherboard than the CPU (no pins are bent, shows no signs of damage).

System:
CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 1700
MOBO: MSI B350 Tomahawk
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2400MHz 2x8GB
PSU: XFX TS 750W

You didnt say which GPU you have ? if its an RX580 ive seen loads of compatibility problems with AM4 boards.

Clear the bios using the jumper on the motherboard, not by removing the battery, it doesnt work on AM4 motherboards.

Then:

Can you test again, this time with the GPU in the 2nd x16 slot.

If it works, get the bios updated first, then swap back to the first PCI-e x16 slot.

The Tomahawks have a ton of negative reviews regarding DoA, so it's possible that the whole first batch of boards was very rushed and did not get proper QA.

I would double check all power connectors by physically pulling out the plugs and inspecting them. Also pull the RAM and try using just 1 stick for now. I seriously doubt it is a defective CPU. It's 90% likely to be the board, and 10% likely to be the PSU.

So does the LEDs jump from CPU to Mem then to VGA then back to CPU again ?

Or, when you power it on, does the cpu light come on and just get stuck there?

It won't move to the next light until it passes the one before, ie it won't check ram until cpu passes, then it won't check vga until ram passes, and then on to boot as long as vga passes.

It should work, if you can get it to run at full speed would be another question, no telling until you try it, different versions of the same modules use different ICs, so C16 might be Hynix memory chips and C14 might be Samsung memory chips for instance.

Just tested the CPU on the new board (aorus x370 gaming k5).... unfortunately turns out that i was unlucky enough to be one of the few who get the dead CPUs, RMA'ing tomorrow, probably getting a refund then going for a 1700x.....

I had several issues with this MoBo and they were all related to the memory.
Start with only one module, with the most conservative configuration possible (leaving the default, after CMOS clearing, worked for me).
Then try to update the BIOS to rev 1.5: this improves tremendously the memory support.
I am using Corsair Vengeance rated at 3000MHz, but could not get them past 2166 without the BIOS update, and I had troubles with 2 modules installed.
Once the BIOS was updated, did not have any issue.

If you have another (older?) GPU, try that too, to exclude that having issues.

Hope this helps.

i tested with bare bones basically, only had the CPU in the mobo, nothing connected, not even HDDs, or RAM or GPU, still got the CPU fail, the RAM is on the qvl anyway.... its a pain, never had this happen to me before, CPU shows no signs of damage visibly, though i will say that the heat spreader on the CPU did look a bit odd, had marks on it in the corners, possibly a sign of damage, either way the CPU has been RMA'd along with the MSI tomahawk MOBO.
Switched to an aorus x370 gaming k5, hoping to get a refund for the CPU soon, will end up back here if i have more problems.....

Hi. I have the same issue with my MSI B350 Tomahawk- CPU EZ Debug led on. I also have Ryzen 7 1700 and RAM Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8 gb DDR4 2400MHz. My GPU is Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050Ti and PSU is Rosewill Glacier 500W. I did all the trouble shooting mentioned here. I RMA'd the mobo and CPU and got fresh parts today but still the same problem. Let me know if it works with the other mobo. Imight consider getting a different brand too.

You basically have the same build i had before i switched the MOBO, (apart from GPU and PSU), seems that there is a possibility that the RAM could not actually be compatible, i tested the CPU only on the new MOBO (Gigabyte AX370 gaming K5) and got a fail, but it seems that RYZEN can give a CPU fail if the RAM is not working properly as the memory controller is on chip.... forgot that when testing in the new board.

I get my CPU back on monday, so if i get a working system il put something here, otherwise, il have to try different RAM, if you can get some different DDR4 RAM, try it with that. Its a bit difficult to get new parts around here, nowhere has started ordering in ryzen compatible stuff yet.

I contacted MSI and this is what they wrote to me:
Please try with clearing the cmos setting on Jbat1 jumper/SW1 Switch or removing the battery on the mb out for 1 minute and put it back in with power off. Please test out the mb and components outside the case with mb box to support the board. This can prevent any short or grounding problem to the mb and the components. Try with swapping other components like the processor/memory/power supply/video card with other working system components to limit down and defective components installed into the system board. Remove all connection/installation of add on cards, drives, and extra cable connection from the mb. Try with bare minimum components installed only. If all steps have been tried and problem still persists then please kindly refer to our website for manufacturer warranty RMA info/request: http://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/rmaform_p.aspx
I pretty much did most of what was suggested in this reply. Hoever, I didn't jump the CMOS for 1 minute but for 5-10 seconds only. I am going to try that tonight and see what happens. Also, I could not swap any other components because I don't have other components to swap to.
My mobo and CPU are fresh copies . I am frustrated but still hopeful that this could be fixed. I mean, what are the chances of me getting two consecutive bad copies of CPU and mobo.

So, I tried again the suggestion from MSI, still nothing. I want to try different RAM. I am wondering because the model of my ram is CMK16GX4M2A2400C16R and it is not in the list of supported RAM (though, it passes the compatibility at PC Partpicker). What's in the list is CMK16GX4M2A2400C16 which is practically the same except for the letter "R" at the end. The difference between the two is that the one with "R" is red and the one without is black. Since the red one is not the list, I suspect that the issue lies in there. But, I might be wrong. Does anyone in here have the black corsair vengeance LPX DDR4 2x8gb 2400MHz in MSI B350 Tomahawk and still encounter the same EZ debug CPU led (no post) problem?

I already contacted Newegg basically just to ask if ever they are aware of the issue and if there have been many returns related to it. The agent told me that he can not speak for my second question. The agent at Newegg arranged my RMA. So going for third try.

i have the black version of that ram, hence why i said you basically had the same core components, but, i still got a CPU fail with it, even after clearing the CMOS. possibly the RAM, be it on the QVL is not actually compatible with the early BIOS's on the tomahawks, unfortunately it cant be upgraded without a CPU though, so your best option is an RMA and see if they can upgrade the BIOS and test with identical components.

il have more info regarding my testing with my x370 board on monday/tuesday as i get my CPU back on monday. i have a strong feeling that the RAM could be the common issue, especially considering im now not the only one who has suffered no POST with that setup...

Turns out that it was the RAM, seems to be incompatible with the tomahawk boards, despite what the QVL says. Ive got a working system now. Id recommend changing boards, Gigabyte have the RAM on the QVL, ive got it running at 2133MHz currently.

The MOBO im using is the Gigabyte Aorus x370 Gaming K5, and obviously, an R7 1700 + 16GB Corsair Vengeance (Same as yours, just the black version).

Check what Gigabyte have available in terms of MOBOs, the QVLs should be the same for all of them, if you can push your budget up a bit, id recommend the board i have (£149.99 on amazon) otherwise, look for gigabyte's b350 boards.

Awesome. Thank you so much. This helps a lot. As of todayI sent my 2nd mobo for a replacement of the same brand (MSI B350 Tomahawk). Likewise, I ordered a different set of RAM from Crucial which is in both Crucial and MSI's QVL. If the mobo still gives the same result, I am going to RMA it again and probably get the same board you got. Thanks for the update. Enjoy your PC.

Finally! I got my system to work. After 3 attempts (read: 3 replacements of Mobo), it turns out that the RAM is the one that was causing the problem. The RAM that worked with my MSI B350 Tomahawk is the Crucial Ballistix SPort (https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820156112). I did not update my BIOS to check if my Corsair RAM would work. I just kept the Ballistix. I did not want to go through the hassles again.

I was frustrated when I first turned on my PC because I saw that dreaded CPU led light again. After few seconds, the CPU LED light turned off then BIOS showed on my monitor.

I am running into a similar problem, albiet slightly different parts. MSI b350m Gaming Pro motherboard, Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15), and a GTX 1050Ti. I've run out of time on my RAM return because I've been attempting to troubleshoot this problem for so long, but hopefully it works fine if I order some new, actually compatible RAM.
