I have a i7-3820 on my main pc . is the upgrade worthy?
My main use is gaming.

At 1440p and higher the GPU matters a lot more than the CPU, games become more GPU bound as you increase the resolution. You can see this when you check GPU+CPU utilisation when playing games at 1440p.

Most of the time your CPU won't be over 60-70% usage most likely.

Oh wow, I'm thinking Haswell. This is an enthusiast build. Sorry it's been a long day. Are you noticing slow down? Why are you wanting to upgrade?

I would spend your money on a new GPU if you want more performance. or a ssd if your system doesnt have one.

I dont see that processor upgrade doing much for your gaming

What GPU do you currently have?

what are the rest of your system specs? how much ram and what speed?

Depending on the game a 970 wont really hold up too well at 1440p. my 970 works great with overwatch, WoW, league (of course). but with games like battlefield and ark, the 970 struggles at 1440p 60 fps

you could sell your 970 and use the money towards a 1070. that would probably be a pretty solid upgrade . looks like you can find them for under 400. as low as 360 with rebates on newegg
