Overclocking has failed, PC crashes even though I haven't done any overclocking.

Hello everyone! This is my first ever thread on tomshardware or on any "tech/PC" forum, so I apologize if I don't explain my problem thorougly, though I will try. English isn't my native language, so I apologize for any inconvenience (ie if my grammar is wrong).

I'm also sorry if this is not a thread that should be posted under overclocking, if so I'm sorry but I don't think that this fits in any other category but I'm sorry if I'm wrong. Please be nice. Also, sorry if any of my tags are wrong.

PROBLEM:
Every other time I turn on my computer it crashes and gives me the error message "overclocking has failed". This message doesn't appear directly, but about 10-20 minutes after the PC has booted. Let's say the first time I boot the PC it will not crash no matter what I do or how long I use it, then when I turn it off then turn it on next time it'll crash after about 10 minutes. I've not done any overclocking at all, and as an intermediate PC user I'm really confused when it comes to bios settings, but I replaced the CMOS battery and reset the bios settings to default, but the crashing still occurs. I have not updated my bios since I got my PC in August of 2014. The process seems very intimidating, so I've not yet had the balls to try it. The only component I've replaced since I got my PC was the GPU, when I got a GTX 1070 and got rid of my 780.

Here's a picture for reference (the error message, upload to postimg.org!): https://s22.postimg.org/sr6kd4w69/IMG_20170601_121803.jpg

Here's my specs:
CPU : Intel Core i7 4790k

GPU : Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 gigabyte (I had a GTX 780 before, with the same issues)
(pic for reference GTX 1070: https://s30.postimg.org/8dmgj03gx/signal-2017-06-01-105901.jpg)

RAM : Corsair Vengence 16gb 1600mhz DDR3

HDD : 3TB 7200rpm (don't remember what brand it is, but as I have my OS on the SSD and nothing boots of this I don't think it's the problem)

SSD : 250 GB Samsung 840 series SSD

MOTHERBOARD : MSI Z97-S02

OS: Windows 10 64-bit (the crashing started to occur after I updated to windows 10, is that a coincidence or not?) & Linux Mate 64-bit. I dual boot, and I choose which OS to boot into via a GRUB.

Conclusive thoughts / hypothesis: Could it be that there's something wrong with the RAM? Ie the RAM timings or are they set at the wrong speeds? I checked and it seemed fine but I'm not sure, like I said I'm only an intermediate PC user and I've never messed with overclocking or the BIOS.
I'm sorry if I've typed anything that's impolite, I'm very friendly and I admire this forum and website. I have great respect for the staff here doing such a good job.

Thanks in advance, Gabriel
