Do I need a sound card with my MOBO or is onboard good enough, paired with Sennheiser Game One

MOBO: MSI Z87-G45

I am going to buy a Sennheiser Game One headset and I was wondering if my MOBO on board audio is good enough for it or would I need to buy a separate sound card, if so what would you guys recommend?

I'd suggest you get the headphones, then after listening to the onboard audio you be the judge. The MOBO had decent audio but your ears may be better than mine, also the headphones are top of the line.

comparing it to headphones its far from 'top of the line' but for a headset, its one one of the better ones. the game one is based on the hd 518/hd558 designs ($80-100 headphone).

the hd518/558 are easy to drive so will work with most products fine.

your motherboard onboard should be at least of decent quality so should work fine. honestly it is hard to judge on specs alone as even motherboards with the same audio chipset can act differently. as long as the volume levels are sufficient and you are getting no distortion, buzzing or other issues i would say onboard is probably fine. you can always upgrade to a soundcard later if you feel it will help.

if you need/want virtual surround sound and your motherboard doesnt have it then upgrading to a soundcard or using the (free, but not very good) razer virtual surround software can fix that.

So I bought it and tested it out, but it does not sound as loud enough, and not enough bass, or as good as my previous headphones Corsair Vengeance 2100 Wireless Dolby 7.1 Gaming Headset, and that headset is wireless, does this mean i need a sound card? If so, which one?
Also it sounds a little bit better and louder when plugging it into my Samsung Galaxy s7

Usually to be loud you need sound card which is a headphone amp too, Xonar is the best range i can think of it.

If the quality is good only not loud enough, just get an amp.
Fiio amps are pretty popular and decent.

fiio products generally have a "low gain" and "high gain" switch. did you make sure to flip this?
