Hi,

I have my pc for 3 years now and never had temperature problems, until now unfortunately. So while playing GTA V, my CPU (I5 3750k NOT overclocked) reaches 90 degrees Celsius.
Since I have the stock cooler, I was thinking about getting the Coolermaster hyper 212 evo.

My main question is, can I install this cooler without removing my motherboard? I have the Fractal R4 case.

Also (noob question), Do I need to remove the thermal paste which is applied to the CPU now (with the stock cooler)? If yes, how do I do it?

Thanks, have a great weekend :)

Solution
looks like that huge windows in the motherboard mounting plate will allow you to access the rear of the motherboard by simply removing the other side panel.

yes if you are changing the cooler changing the paste is the procedure. rubbing alcohol and coffee filters. saturate the filters and gently rub the paste off the CPU. allow alcohol to dry before adding new paste. the 212 evo comes with paste.
if it was fine before

either

theres a problem with the cpu fan

or the thermal paste has dried out

or one of the push pins has disengaged

most decent cases have a cpu cut out allowing changing cooler with out removing the motherboard

yes change the thermal paste if you take the cooler off

personally i just wipe the old thermal paste off with a lint free cloth

though some people say you need to use isopropyl alcohol etc wiping it off with just a lint free cloth has never caused me any temperature issues

all thats left is a microscopic haze

The motherboard plate has the big square cut out where the CPU sets so yes. Remove the right side panel to install the 212's back plate. Basically you have access to both sides with that case.
