I literally just got the Astro A40 headset to find out that the mic doesn't work. The internet wasn't that useful this time so I was freaking out. I decided to try the headset on my phone, and it works. I don't have the amp, I only have the headset. I am also on the computer.

You probably need a 3.5mm splitter in order to use the mic.
Things like phones and laptops use combo jacks that have the mic and audio in the same jack (4 poles). Desktops split the audio and microphone ports (usually green and pink on the motherboard).
