So I've had my pc for around 6 months. But just two days ago my windows wouldn't start up. So I went and got Windows 10 and I'm trying to install it. When I get to the select a disk to install it on screen, and I select my disk and click next it gives me this error, "Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for an installation. Error code 0x80070057". This is really frustrating and whenever I try formatting a partition it gives me the same error. Please help!

Try deleting the partitions first, and any partitions on that same drive, so there maybe multiple partitions on the same drive, DRIVE 0 Partition 1, DRIVE 0 Partition 2, DRIVE 0 Partition 3 etc, you need to delete them all and then select un-partitioned space and click next down the bottom.

So if your telling me to select the "Unallocated Space" drive then that still gave me the same error.

Did you also delete the recovery and system reserved partitions ?

Just one more question, did you boot off the USB in UEFI or Legacy ?

I have no idea what either of those are, but if you could tell me how I can find out that would be great :)

Easiest way is restart the computer and tap away on the F12 key.

it will come up with a boot options menu, should say something like:

Press 1 to boot USB (UEFI)
Press 2 to Boot off USB

Select option 2

Which motherboard by the way ?

OK, did you change your boot priorty in the bios ? if so, you've selected the USB stick as the first boot device, make sure that doesnt say UEFI USB stick, just change it to USB stick only, also, if there is an option to change the OS type, make sure other OS is selected rather than Windows 10 although you are installing Windows 10.

You have quite an old board, and it sounds to me like it trying to install in UEFI mode, your bios doesnt appear to support UEFI according to the manual.

Yes I did change it in the bios. In my first boot device is "USB: KDI-MSFT Windows" and nothing is in the second slot. Also I don't see any options to change the OS.

OK there is another option there, Legacy USB Support, set it to enabled please, save changes and exit, try again.

I was literally just on that page while waiting for a reply. I don't see what I am supposed to do with that from seeing the fact i'm not on any sort of dell pc with a bios like that.

On your unpartitioned space could you click new rather than next and try set the drive up.
