CPU fan header fried, question about parts testing.

Recently the fan header on my Z97-A motherboard fried and I want to test if my parts survive,

1) Can I just plug my CPU into another friend's PC (same chipset of course) and test the CPU?

2) How would I go about testing my Boot drive and storage drives?

3) Assuming everything survived can I just get another motherboard and straight swap?

1. Yes you can do that, it would be the best way to test it.

2. Do the same, plug them into your friends computer and see if they still work.

3. Yes, if its the same board you can do a straight swap.

How did the header fry ? is whats interesting to me.

Frankly I'm not quite sure, I woke up, booted up my PC, saw smoke coming out, turned every thing off and saw that it's only that part of the mobo that fried, it might be a PSU fault but again I'm not sure.

To be on the safe side, I would say dont use the PSU again on a new board, however, also inspect the CPU Fan cable itself, maybe the CPU fan itself caused the short.

Yeah I don't think I can use that fan again anyway, the header melted slightly and welded itself to the connector on the motherboard itself lol.
