CPU makes low clicking sound, then computer shuts off

So just yesterday i started having an issue with my computer.

My computer was running fine, then gradually throughout the day yesterday it started running slower. Programs would take forever to open and hovering over something or clicking on something would take a few seconds to register (e.g. in google chrome, hovering over the 'minimize' button would take roughly 2 seconds to register, then clicking the button would take 2 more seconds to actually minimize chrome). After this progressed to the point where I couldn't do anything, my computer froze; Mouse, programs, everything. then i would hear a clicking sound from where i thought was coming from the CPU or motherboard. Then my computer would shut off on its own. No BSOD, just fade to a black screen. I tried to turn on my computer two other times and after maybe 5-10 minutes of use it would repeat the same things.

It may be worth mentioning that I have an led strip usb connected to my computer that normally stays on while my computer is off. When this happened, each time the usb would turn off.

Ive heard people say that it could be an HDD failure, but the noise didn't come from the HDD. Others say its a power supply issue, but again, I didn't hear a noise come from there. I checked CPU temps the third time I turned my computer on and saw that CPU temps were above normal in the 200 degrees Fahrenheit range. As I was checking them, the computer froze and turned off. My best guess is that its a CPU issue, overheating and shutting down to protect itself.

Ive had the computer for about 3 years now and havent applied new thermal paste to the CPU. Could this be the issue? Im quite inexperienced when it comes to computer repair so any help is much appreciated.

Solution
Could be several things, overheating is one, failing power supply is another. Open up the system, clean it out (carefully so you don't damage the motherboard or anything else, canned air is good. For something cheap and re-usable, I use a foam water cannon like this http://www.swagbrokers.com/Foam-Squirt-Cannon-Direct-Import---10-Weeks-Ocean-314525794 it blasts air out pretty well, cheaper than canned air and never runs out).

Get some new thermal paste, Noctua NT-H1 is good and mid-range in price, remove CPU heatsink, clean off heatsink and CPU top, apply a bit of paste, install heatsink, see how things run. Make sure the fans are running, the clicking may be coming from a bad fan.

It may be a few days until I can test this since i dont have any thermal paste on hand. I was going to buy a new i7 cpu anyways so ill go ahead and order both and let you know how it works out on the new cpu with newly applied thermal paste. Thank you for your suggestions, ill keep this thread updated!

Thank you for the tips hang-the-9, turns out it was definitely an overheating issue. It was my cpu heatsink that was no longer working after 3 years of use. I got a new I7 CPU, and installed the new fan that came with it and it works great now. runs a little hotter than i hoped but ill let the thermal paste harden a little before I make that call.
