CPU - i7-4790k
MOBO - ASUS Z97-AR
PSU - Corsair CX650
GPU - STRIX RX-470 (4gb)

I'm currently running some DDR3 Corsair Veng (2x8gb) at 2400mhz, and I have 2 extra ram slots available not being used. My buddy is selling parts from his computer for pretty cheap, and hes got some G.Skill Ripjaws Z (2x4gb) at 2133mhz.

Now I know that my Corsair Veng's will drop to 2133 if I were to install these, but I'm not sure if I can even do that? Does my RAM have to be exactly the same? Or can I use a different pair of RAM as long as they're slotted accordingly and they're matching?

All 4 sticks run at the same Voltage as well, which is 1.65, but their timings are much different.

Vengance :

DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200)
Timing 11-13-13-31
Cas Latency 11
Voltage 1.65V

G.Skill:

DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000)
Timing 9-11-10-28
Cas Latency 9
Voltage 1.65V

Thanks so much

Solution
its the timings that will cause trouble.
They will either work or they will not. if you have the RAM in hand try them out, run memtest for a pass or 4 and await errors, if memtest gives the all clear it should work.

Awesome, that's just the info I was looking for. I do have them on hand to try before buying as well, thanks so much for the info!
