A bit of a noob here...

I upgrade my 970 into an MSI GTX 1080 but after installing (through the 6-pin connector) My PC will turn on along with the LED on the graphics card but my monitor wont find a signal (monitor says nothing is connected to it). I tried through DVI, HDMI, & DisplayPort. Even tried with a 2nd monitor and nothing working. When re-installing my 970 -- the monitors work just fine.

I have it running using a 6 pin connector from the PSU -- When trying to run it through a 6+2 pin connector my PC will turn on for half a second and shuts back down.

With a graphics card like this, am I supposed to have a 6 pin and a 6+2 pin connector plugged in? or am I supposed to able to run it either just the 6 pin or just the 6+2 pin?

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Solution

I've used 2 cables running from the PSU that I used to connect the ASUS 970 that I already have and the 8pin connector worked perfectly fine (still does, currently have the 970 installed right now). But the same cables don't work on the 1080.
The graphics card needs both connectors plugged in. So that means both a 6 pin and an 8 pin (or 6+2).
You said your computer turns off when using the 6+2, were you using just the 6 pin or did you use all 8 pins in an 8 pin socket? Your PSU is more then enough, so it shouldn't be the issue.

So I've powered it up 3 different ways now.

With JUST the 6 pin it powers on (PC and graphics card LED turns on) but the monitor doesn't recognize my PC no matter what port I use (DVI, DisplayPort, HDMI)

With ONLY 8 pin (6+2 pin), the lights and fans turn on for half a second and shuts down -- after that I'm unable to turn on the PC at all without having to cut the power out of the PC and trying again (which turns on for only half a second again)

with the 8 pin & the 6 pin connected -- I get the same results as when I try using the 8 pin only.

So for some reason my PC won't turn on when I have it connected to the 8-pin connection.

That's strange. It's unlikely to be an issue with the card, unless the 8 pin is creating a short that's causing the PSU to shut off...but this is extremely unlikely. So it has to be somewhere in the 6+2 cable and the PSU. Do you have another cable that you can try? If not, then I just don't know what else you can try, you may need another PSU.

Oh ok, so the 970 is a model that requires a 6 and 8 pin connector too? Well, it must be a fault in the card then, return it and get a replacement.

The 970 only requires an 8-pin connection - but yeah that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the help though!
