My mom's iMac, which she got a few months ago, has been running very slowly. As I've been typing, I've gotten the pinwheel of death at least 10 times. She isn't running any intensive programs (Word, Firefox, Evernote, etc) and no more than a few at a time. She doesn't have many browser tabs open. And, over 300gb of her 1tb Fusion Drive is free, which I'd think is more than enough to run smoothly.

Here's some specs:

macOS Sierra (10.12.5)
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
3.2 GHz Intel Core i5
16 GB

If you need more information, let me know and I'll add an edit. Any advice and troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Solution
Try running a scan with Malwarebytes. At least half the Macs I service have some sort of Malware on them. Some of which cause severe slow downs. Then use Adblock (from getadblock.com) for each of your browsers.

Open Disk Utility and run first aid on your hard drive. Which will check for issues and repair simple problems.

Open Activity Monitor. Look for high CPU usage and check memory pressure. Memory pressure should be green.

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately, neither Malwarebytes nor Disk Utility revealed any issues. With as few browser tabs as she has open, I'm guessing ads couldn't account for the amount of lag I'm seeing. Memory pressure is in the green.

Firefox is using about 60% CPU with spikes up to around 80%. Is that normal?
