I have a new as rock b250m performance motherboard. can I use a single 8 gig ram chip or must i use 2 ram chips?

Solution
You can use 1 DIMM (not chip). You won't get the maximum memory performance. You may or may not successfully add RAM in the future. It is best to buy ALL the RAM you want to start with, that way you can buy a matched set of DIMMs.

I agree completely.

I'd like to add that RAM should be bought as a kit. I know you mods are always busy countering spam and I'm not knocking that, but I didn't see it specified in your response that RAM should be bought as a kit. I interpreted "that way you can buy a matched set of DIMMs" as "I can separately buy two of the same stick."

I didn't want OP to have the same misunderstanding and end up having memory compatibility issues.

Maybe I'm just paranoid

A matched set is only available as a kit. Multiple DIMMs of the same type purchased at the same time from the same vendor are NOT matched. Matched DIMMs have been tested by the manufacturer to work as a set.

I call myself a Homebuilt Systems Master and I didn't know that lol

How can you be sure OP knows that matched doesn't just mean two of the same?

That being said, we've both made our points so I think I'll just agree to disagree. No hard feelings mate
