Will a Ryzen Chip be worth getting over a 4 Core 8 Thread i7?

im currently upgrading my CPU and motherboard and im not sure weather or not to get an i7 4770K/4790K/6700K/7700K or a R5 1600/1600X. all i do is game on my PC and watch videos on my other monitor while playing games. i want my CPU to be able to keep up with my current GPU and in the future a GTX 1080 Ti. i want to make sure that my CPU can last future titles without getting pegged 100% usage. whats the best bet to go for here?

OPTION IF YOU GOT MONEY:

I would say if you go gaming and watch YouTube/Netflix or anything like that on a second monitor I would go I7 7700K. If you are going to go and play games and watch YouTube/Netflix and plan on doing streaming or recording for a service like YouTube, I would then say go Ryzen 5 1600X.

COMPARING THE TWO CPUs:

The Ryzen will help you in things like streaming due to the fact that it has 6/12 (6 cores 12 threads). The Ryzen is also not a slouch it will perform close to the I7 7700K in gaming, may be 10-20 frames less in some games. I would also say the Ryzen will have a better upgrade path, so if you go Ryzen you will be able to...

Normally, I'd choose the Intel solution over the AMD. But if you plan on somewhat heavy multi-tasking, the 6C/12T 1600X may be the better choice.

My 1600X @ 4GHz slightly out performs my stock i7-4790 in about half of the game benchmarks I've been able to run. I'm still testing... And, it will take awhile for developers to code games to take advantage of the characteristics of the new AMD chip.

(Sadly, I no longer have my i7-4790K system)

also, whats the deal with all Ryzen chips only being able to reach 4GHz? every person i talk to who has a Ryzen chip they cant exceed 4GHz. whats the deal with that?

The 14nm process AMD is using to make Ryzen was initially designed for low clocked mobile CPUs, think tablet and phone chips. As such, Ryzen can't achieve very high clockspeeds due to the limitations of that process, it really wasn't meant for high clocked desktop chips, consider yourself lucky Ryzen didn't launch in the 2.6-2.8GHz range. 4GHz is generally the ceiling for Ryzen, with maybe a few golden samples getting up to 4.1 or 4.2. Further refinements to the process may improve overclocking a bit, but don't expect to ever see a Ryzen chip getting up to 5GHz like the Kaby Lake Intels can.

I would also say the Ryzen will have a better upgrade path, so if you go Ryzen you will be able to upgrade in the future, while if you went I7 7700K you will then need to upgrade MOBO and CPU again. (Remember the R5 1600 is a lot cheaper than the I7 7700K)

Now the I7 7700K is better in things like gaming, it wont do anything watching videos really, may loose 2 or 3 framed, but thats nothing. The I7 7700K is also not that bad at streaming to be completely honest. I have a streamer buddy and he streams on his I7 7700K and GTX 750 TI and he has zero problems streaming in 720P 60 frames (he gets 5-10 FPS drops not much), he also streams in 30 FPS and really gets no noticeable drops, may be around 5 at absolute max, unless the game is very CPU bound it will then be more.

CONCLUSION:

So in conclusion with what you stated I would go Ryzen, not because it performs better because it does not, but because you will have upgrade path in the future (due to the new socket). You can always go I7 7700K route and upgrade MOBO and CPU in the future if you got the money for it, but if you dont got a lot of money I would stick to the Ryzen upgrade (Ryzen 5 1600X).

looking at benchmarks, the Ryzen CPU's dont get close to the i7's. or even the i5's for a matter of fact. when both the i5 6600k and R 7 1800X are overclocked the i5 6600k pulls away by 5-10 FPS. the i7's pull away even more significantly from the i5's like 15-20 FPS.

Yeah I think I may have been thinking while streaming.

ah right in that case the gap would have been a bit smaller. and thanks for your insight. i think im going to go with the i7 4770K/4790K/6700K/7700K route. but you opened my eyes a bit when it comes to Ryzen. Thanks alot for your help!
