I need to clean the thermal paste of my cpu to reapply, I have no access to isopropyl alcohol, and cannot buy it online or from a store because there are none nearby minimum 4 days to get access to any and I need my pc back operational within a day, please help (also I suspect the oils from my fingers probably ended up on the heat sync as I was cleaning the dust, so I can't just buff it off)

Solution
ISO-propanol (rubbing alcohol), ethanol (drinking alcohol), vinegar, finger nail polish remover, lighter fluid (naptha), mineral spirits, soap (rinse x 3 with wet coffee filters, then dry with filters).

it does not have to meet the standards of operational sterility. the cleaner the better, the lint free the better. the old paste has to go though. the cured paste will offer more hindrance to cooling than a touch of soap-scum, or a fingerprint.

I also have read several people talking about lighter fluid as an alternative, yes others saying that is an extremely bad idea :S
Problem is I am beyond poor, have no transport and the nearest town is over 5 miles away (we also don't have a bus service in my village)

vinegar
white vinegar and coffee filters

just give it plenty of time to evaporate. alcohol is the darling of choice because she evaporates fast
the sanitizer has other additives which will dry into a layer, aloe, fragrance etc.

Yeah I thought that would be the issue :/
Hmm will see if we have some but I think the only vinegar we have is malt :/ was hoping some other cleaning solution intended for some other purpose would do the trick because my guardian is the village hall caretaker

no ... you don't want aloe vera on there. I think just a bit of soap would remove the oil you think you might have put on the heat sink. As for the cpu ... maybe just apply a very thin coat of new paste right over the old - all the paste is for is to ensure there are no insulating air pockets to hinder the heat transfer.

you can use anything that will do the following
cut/dilute the paste
residue free
coffee filters are lint free

you want there to be as close to nothing as possible in the CPU. no lint, no oil, no anything, as close as you can get. anything that will do that without dissolving the heat spreader adhesive is a candidate.
the paste is meant to fill the voids in the imperfections in the heat spreader and the cooler. you want to remove the old paste because it has cured, adding paste will cure in a new layer. so removal of the cured paste in important.

Wouldn't the soap cause the same issue as the alcohol gel with added aloe though? :/ the residue I mean? (genuinely asking, cause atm that sounds like the only thing I may have access to :S

Any examples? Because I really am limited to base household/janitor items, ie surface cleaning fluids (ie glass spray, and so on) soap, the only possible other thing I can think of personally that we have is coffee filters, and microfiber cloths, but I can't think of anything to pair it with as it almost definitely came into contact with my skin

Okays thankyou all greatly!! Will try the soap and rinse/dry thoroughly with coffee filters one, as I think those are the only things I definitely have in the house :')
Hoping since I didn't touch the processor using a dry coffee filter should be enough to remove the paste xD
