Hello guys,

I wanted to ask if there is a way to run an Ivy processor on sandy bridge motherboard...
I want to run an i3-3210M on HM-70.
everytime i start my laptop it shuts down after 30 mins..it works pefectly except the unknown "timer" that shuts it down every 30 min (exactly..i checked it out with a timer)...
I checked the socket and it should be ok, cooling too (TDP is same on both old and new processors), BIOS is ok (upgraded to last version), checked if my laptop supports this processor and it does (got info from here http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-HP/650.html )
I've got an HP 650 notebook pc.
4GB ram
First time when i ran it up i didn't knew what happened when it turned off after 30 mins.
Then i found out that it might be the thing that the motherboard doesn't feel good with the CPU...
Also i wanted to ask if a fresh install of windows will help..

Thanks

Did you make sure your laptop's BIOS is up to date? If there are no BIOS updates for it, then the manufacturer put a lid on the upgrade option as does most company's to safe guard the end user and/or the company.

Customary to a CPU/Motherboard upgrade is to reinstall your OS. See if that helps you out. I'm sure you meant i5-3210M and not an i3-3210M.

Yes i did...my BIOS is up to date...since 2014 there are no new updates...
So if i install a new CPU does it need something to download to work? (i mean something like drivers...except video drivers. Bcs i think that if the problem is in driver or something that puts the CPU at work or to work properly it should install them. If i reinstall my OS it should be clean with only those things that i3-3210m needs. Can my old let's say "Drivers" interract with those newely installed for new CPU? Bcs if it does i have no option to fresh install again OS bcs for that i would need the CPU to be in my laptop and reinstall my OS to have only those "Drivers" it needs but i couldn't do that bcs it shuts down after 30 mins. i don't have a chance to do that...)
BTW...i'm a newbie, dont have much experience..so i think it could be everything...

I'm curious, did you apply your thermal compound for the CPU cooler properly or did you just reuse it? After a new installation of OS, you're going to have to reinstall your drivers as you would've on any other desktop(if you did a clean OS install). The reason you need to do a reinstall is so that the OS recognizes the right CPU in your system as will the rest of your apps.

On that note, is this your notebook? If so please double-check the OS from the drop down menu and download all the drivers corresponding t it.

Yes i did...
I actually placed a new amount of paste everytime it shuted down (so...it shuted down and i replaced the paste...and again 4 times)
so..u reccomend another fresh OS install?
but do i need to fresh install with the old CPU or the new one? bcs with the new one i have no chances to do that (30 mins isn't a big amount of time to reinstall an OS)
Yes it is...i downloaded all the new drivers automatically...checked the automatic new updates, did the manual updates from HP-support page, then again checked the automatic updates..I even downloaded softwares to update my drivers (told me i got all up to date)

If it is not a CPU issue, what could it be?
I've read somewhere that it could be a BIOS timer running...
Laptop shuts down exactly after 30 mins even when in BIOS

And i also used Intel Driver Update Utility to check again my drivers and everything is ok

Honestly, I'd think it's a possible malware problem or actual laptop setting. I can't think of a setting that would account for it, but 30 minutes exactly(or close enough to) is odd. Is the laptop plugged in when you are testing this?
I don't think a fresh install of Windows is a bad idea though. Install, update drivers and such, and try to see if you can get past the 30 minute mark.

I don't think it's a malware problem...I installed back the old CPU to see if the "countdown" will shut my laptop and it didn't...
Yes, I got my laptop plugged when I did the test..
And shall I reinstall my OS with the old or new CPU?
Do you recommend to fresh install from a CD or from the laptop itself?

I think i found out what is the problem...
Interrupt request (IRQ) in the device manager
i found out how to resolve it from a website : Right-click each conflicting device and select "Properties." In the Properties window for each device, click the "Resources" tab. Check to see if the conflicting devices have reserved IRQs. If the option to change resource settings is unavailable (greyed-out) you can not reassign IRQs from within Device Manager because the IRQs are resereved
But i got my settings greyed out so i can't change it...
anyone got some ideas how to help me?
I tried a fresh install of OS..30 minutes is not enough to reinstall my os... :/ so it sutted down...luckily i did not lose any data

could it be because of a bad overclock or an unsuccessfull overclock?
