I have a dell OptiPlex 780 dt and a 1 tb hdd that's 3.5. I don't know how to properly install the hdd and configure it so it shows up on windows and bios not just bios. Any help please?

I presume you are adding this HDD as a second drive? if so, go to computer management/storage/disk management and initialize the new drive.

I tried that but couldn't figure out how to do it properly. Also I need help physically installing it as well. I want to replace the optical drive with the 3.5 hdd.how do I do this?

Physically going from a 5.25" device (optical drive) to a 3.5" device (HDD) might be a problem with that optiplex desktop. Dell uses proprietary mounting hdwr. and methods that don't easily adapt themselves to using a different size/type of device. If you had the mini tower it would be straight forward.

As to initializing, there should be no problem. if Win doesn't automatically pop up a dialog box asking you to do it, just hi-lite the drive and select initialize from the menu above.

There would be no issue replacing the drive already in the dt would it?
