Hi Guys. My dad is running an old pc that i want to get a few upgrades for him for christmas. I know its a long way off, but i want to make sure I've done my research and get the right parts. He's currently running an asrock G41M-VS2 and an Intel Pentium dual core E5300.

To give him that boost of processing power, which processors can I get for him that are better than that pentium that would work for that board?

Also, What graphics card would work? a gtx700 series? his PCI x16 is unused, so maybe one of those?

Thanks guys!!

Does he play games? If not an SSD would be much better performance wise than a video card.

Get any of the Core 2 Quad models in the CPU support list. Preferably 2.5Ghz or better. The used ones are cheap on eBay. There is no reason not to buy used. A new one isn't any better (and likely a ridiculous price).

As for the SSD. Just get a cheap model. Any SSD will fully saturate the SATA II BUS. 120GB is likely large enough.

What is your budget? A Pentium G4560, new B250 motherboard and RAM will be a much better upgrade.

Although keep in mind that a new motherboard might not fit in the case because sometimes prebuilts use proprietary motherboard mount.

Agree, Here is the supported list: http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASRock/G41M-VS2.html Update your MB BIOS to most recent before you do anything, your MB only supports the later CPUs at the most recent BIOS level.

Also, if upgrading CPU you will find OK used prices on ebay / amazon and horrible prices for new CPUs if you can find them at all. Consider the Q9650 at 3 GHz. Then put a new cooler on it, the cooler you have from the E5300 can't cool it. Depending on case lots of good $20 / $40 options. A good cooler will let the Q9650 work well. Lots of videos on youtube showing how to install cpu with new thermal paste, or the new cooler might come with paste already applied.

If you upgrade video card then first check the power supply wattage on 12V, and get a video card that works with your power supply or plan on update the PSU.
