Will this motherboard and CPU work?

I went to Fries recently and purchased a i5 7600k, and asked for a budget board for it which the employee told me a SUPERMICRO C7Z170-SQ would work. I get home and read that it works with 6th gen processors which the 7600k is a 7th gen. They both have LGA 1151, but I read that the bios might need updating, which would require another CPU to do, which I don't have laying around. Can somebody clear this up? Will it work if I install it as is? Or should I be taking it back and exchanging it?

Take it back and exchange it, 6th gen is 6xxx CPU's (Sky Lake) and 7th gen is 7xxxx (Kaby Lake), the 100 series motherboard that you have needs a bios update to support Kaby Lake CPUs and to do that you need a Sky Lake CPU...

Take it back and exchange it, 6th gen is 6xxx CPU's (Sky Lake) and 7th gen is 7xxxx (Kaby Lake), the 100 series motherboard that you have needs a bios update to support Kaby Lake CPUs and to do that you need a Sky Lake CPU, you need a 200 series motherboard is you dont have a Sky Lake CPU, or get them to update the bios on your current board for you.

Thank you, I thought this was going to be the case should of payed more attention rather than trusting an employee, I'm glad I checked before I tried installing it!

Yeah dont install it, they may argue that its been used, and that could cause more problems, most employee's are just trying to get a sale.

Your Intel Z170 Express Chipset is Intel 100 Series Chipset that needs BIOS update for 7th Generation CPU. A newer MORE EXPENSIVE Intel 200 Series Chipset such as Z270 Chipset does not need BIOS update for 7th Generation CPU.
