I currently have a Dell XPS 8900 Desktop with an i7 6700 (3.4) and wanted to know if it was possible to upgrade to the new kaby lake i7 7700k (4.2)?
If yes, would I be able to keep the same fan that came with the 6700 or would I have to get a new fan? Thanks in advance guys.

That's the problem. Dell's website doesn't provide the information to confirm one way or the other. As mentioned I did try a search for that Dell model to see if anyone has tried to upgrade to Kaby Lake but couldn't find any results. What is more certain is a Z170 motherboard would require a BIOS update to work with a Kaby Lake CPU. The question remains as to whether Dell released such a BIOS.

This document would suggest all i7s of that generation are compatible, so an upgrade to the i7-6700k is safer. But again, I'm not overly convinced it's a worthwhile upgrade.
Personally I'm not too sure if it's worthwhile for that particular processor change if possible.

The socket itself is physically compatible, but the problem comes down to whether Dell has released a BIOS which allows for it. There is a BIOS dated to February this year, but no notes relating to what it does. Further searches have also proven fruitless.

Do you think the bios would allow for the unlocked version of the 6700(the 6700k)?
