So today I turned on my computer. Everything seemed to be working fine and I left the room. When I came back, it was off and wouldn't boot. I can get the fans to spin and the light on the front to come on for about 1/10th of a second if I:

  • have only just plugged the lead into the PS
have not previously tried to boot it up without first unplugging and re-plugging in the lead.

The power supply used to make a 'pop' when I switched the power supply on, which I always assumed was the sound of a capacitor charging or something. It no longer makes this 'pop', so I think it's maybe a capacitor thats gone.

Any advice as to what is wrong with it would be massively appreciated. If I open up the PS, will I be able to notice any capacitors that are broken?

I've tried a different lead and I have tried using the power button located on the mobo. PS is an OCZ bronze series 650W which has about 13000 hrs on it.

Thanks, Kit.

as herrwizo said, it's probably died, you may be able to see that a capacitor has bulged in the psu, but that psu will could still have a pretty potent amount of charge inside - Try another psu if possible, then buy a new one if that is the issue. -which by the description, sounds extremely likely.

Thanks very much guys. I might look into safely fully discharging a PS and look inside, as I'm in no rush now as I've put my HDD in another computer so can carry on with school work (exams start on Monday...)

Cheers, Kit.

Usually I find just unplugging from the wall then powering on the machine tends to draw the current out of the psu, - be careful though.

Good Luck with the exams!

Alright guys well I have finally got around to looking into this problem. Took the power supply apart, found no fault.
I then plugged everything back in, as it was, but started unplugging different components until it powered up. As I attempted to power it up, I spotted a small poof of smoke come from the GPU (Radeon Sapphire HD7770 overclock or something). Pulled that out of the mobo, and now everything works perfectly.

Just running on Intel graphics - but my gaming days are probably over anyway.

Thanks for the advice and best wishes in my exams :)

Just thought i'd put this here for other people running into the same problem: start unplugging components until it runs :)

cheers, Kit.
