When Intel announces Kaby Lake X, it gives me the impression that Intel is killing its own consumer motherboard and want all of the consumers to move to extreme motherboard even though it is completely stripped down version (Yeah, most of the features on X299 are disabled, The integrated graphic card was there). Also why would intel release i5 on Kaby Lake X? It is uncommon for intel tp do that. Normally they would only have i7.

When I know that Kaby Lake X have almost the same as the mainstream Kaby Lake, I always think that Intel has been screwing us the customers. Intel seems like shooting themselves in the foot.

So, what are the main differences between X99 and X299? is it worth the upgrade from X99? any major features? I heard that X299 only support intel SSD and you can't install any SSD other than the one from Intel?

Solution

Possible as their are other points to the top motherboard. More video slots, memory overclocking, and other features. As for the X399 they both have been doing this for decades. AMD's black edition to Intels K series, AMD's 3D now to MMX, and others always trying to one up each other. Adding IGP, memory controller on...

Okay, So I guess there won't be any Z motherboard anymore after this Z270. I don't even know why AMD comes up with the name X399. Is AMD try to claim the name first before Intel does?

We will have another Z series chipset, the Kaby Lake X's are literally the mainstream chips on the (HEDT)new socket. Real Kaby-Lake X CPU's will come out along with their Xeon brothers (HEDT is Xeon chips renamed/binned down).
Ignore the current Kaby-Lake X CPU's, the X299 launch was really for Skylake-X with up the 18 cores.

There is literally no reason to buy Kabylake-X i5 or i7 and an X299 board, you are just throwing money away on a more expensive motherboard with features you cannot use, unless you plan on upgrading to a real Kabylake-X CPU when they come out.

So, when will this real Kaby Lake X release? How do I tell the difference between this Kaby Lake X I heard and the real Kaby Lake X you talked about? I also heard that Kaby Lake X is undercut even before it release? what do you mean the real Kaby Lake X? do you mean coffee lake or cannon lake or is there something else that I miss? Thanks for the answer though.

No I mean "real" Kabylake-X which will be 6 or 8 core minimum's, it depends on on when Intel also plans to release their next Xeon E5, E7 lineup which I think is v6?

Intel has two desktop product stacks basically, the mainstream, and High end desktop (HEDT)/Server.
First release is mainstream followed by HEDT/Server several months or a year later.
Expect the high end Kabylake-X's around the time coffelake mainstream launches.

Okay, I get it. that makes sense. Yeah, as far as I know that the Extreme (Formerly Enthusiast) are always a generation behind. I guess this is another anomaly product release conducted by Intel. First, No tick tock for Kaby Lake and now Kaby Lake X and Skylake X will be available at the same time, and surprisingly the "real" Kaby Lake will release 6 or 8 cores which has fewer cores than the Skylake X counterparts. I don't know the purpose of any of this. Is it possible that they release fewer cores to increase single thread performance and better overclocking? maybe a little insight for me? Any insight is appreciated.
