Dell Inspiron 531 - Upgrade options?

Hello everybody. I wanted to ask what potential upgrades I can do to this Inspiron 531 desktop I just recently acquired? It originally had a measly 512 MB of RAM (64 of it was being used by the integrated graphics) and it had a load of Windows 7 with Norton...

It was unbearably slow, so I put a legal copy of 8.1 on it (I used a temporary product key: the ones you can use to get past the install so you can put a real key in later) and it was a bit more responsive, but still very slow.

Speed up to now: I found a spare 1 GB module in my collection of parts, so it now has 1.5 GB of memory to work with and I put an 850 EVO SSD in to replace the old drive it had before. That, and it now has an 8400 GS 1 GB card. It is currently dual-booting XP and Windows 10. XP is very, very fast on this machine. 10 is a bit sluggish (I used the Enterprise LTSB 90 day evaluation which Microsoft offers on their site) but still usable.

I've heard from a few people that this particular machine can go all the way up to 8 GB of RAM. Is this true? I know the CPU on mine is 64 bit capable, so it would make sense, but Dell says it can only go up to 4, yet I've seen various people online saying that it can go up to 8 with no issues. I was thinking of buying this particular RAM here:

Since it matches the RAM which is in the computer currently. This is a nice little machine which is very capable, and I'd love to make it even faster!

I don't know where you heard your information but this link says you can only go up to 4GB DDR2-800MHz. The board's model number was pulled from here though you will need to double check with your motherboard.

The ram kit you've linked might work though it's a good idea to see if your unit has any BIOS updates pending and as a precautionary note, adding more ram will only add more stress/heat to the north bridge/integrated memory controller so please be prepared to run with a warmer system than before and make sure your airflow is good.

It might be a good idea to link the pages where you've seen folks go to 8GB for the sake of surety.

Hi. Thanks for the response. I just checked what the motherboard model is for mine and it came back as being a Dell 0RY206 board (at least according to CPU-Z. I've already updated the BIOS to the latest revision (1.0.13, it was at 1.0.3 when I got it) so that's covered. This particular link on the Dell forums say the following:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19511274

"Dell's specifications say, 4gb, but it has been well documented that the 0RY206 motherboard can support 8gb using 4x2 DDR2 modules, with an Windows 7x64 OS.."

As for the airflow issue: Thanks for letting me know of that. I'll keep that in mind. Here's another link to a different topic found on this very site:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/53343-2-inspiron-memory

"Dell and Crucial say this Inspiron 531 only handles up to 4 GB RAM, but we've proven the motherboard will recognize and operate with MAX RAM of 8 GB using 4x2 GB DDR2 PC2 cards and Windows 7 x64."
