Should I get a new hard drive?

Tl;dr Gta is lagging when i drive fast, should I buy a new HD?

Context: Ok so I recently started playing GTA V on my PC, and I have a frequent freeze/stutter/lag problem whenever I drive. Basically my desktop doesn't keep up with terrain-generating. So I ran the task manager on my second monitor to see try to find the problem and I saw that the disk is constantly working at 90-100% when I drive. And Gta V was taking up like 80-95% of the disk. I of course googled and I didn't get a good answer besides that other people with the same problem had bought a new driver. My driver is like 4 years old now I think. So I'm considering buying a new one. I'm not that deep into tech yet and was unsure if buying a new SSD was the way to go. And just to see if I was about to buy something unnecessarily, I ask around here. :)

This is the HD I have right now.

It certainly looks like the hard drive could be contributing to the problem. SSDs are not overly expensive anymore, and if it's that big of a deal, you could easily add an SSD to your system to run GTA V from.

On the other hand... You have 4 GB of RAM, so it's very likely that your system is doing a lot of paging to the Windows page file, which would easily account for the high disk usage. Look into getting up to a minimum of 8 GB, that would probably provide more improvement than moving GTA V to an SSD.

For GTA V, 4 GB is considered the minimum. Recommended is 8 GB, which means, it wouldn't hurt to have more. Also, 64-bit Windows is given as a requirement, so it would certainly help if your system was running 64-bit Windows, as you...

I don't know if GTA V would refuse to run if you were on 32-bit Windows.

Ty, I should should probably upgrade both ram and add a hard drive then. I do have 64-bit windows so that shouldn't be a problem. What do you think would most likely be the problem? As I am probably going to by both in the end I want to know what to start with. Student budgeting is pretty tough x)

I would suspect RAM is the more urgent part of the performance degradation, but that could use a bit more investigation.

Fire up Resource Monitor through Task Manager and have a look at disk activity while playing GTA V. See if your pagefile.sys is getting accessed frequently while playing. If so, there you go. Perhaps look at the memory usage of GTA V as well. If it's over 3 GB, which I suspect it will be, it's likely to cause a good deal of paging.

Second, you mention adding a "hard drive." Do you really mean, adding another spinning platter, magnetic storage device, or an SSD? Adding another spinning platter hard drive isn't a guarantee of anything except, more space. If you want to see a significant improvement in storage response, go with an SSD, otherwise you're not going to be gaining much.
