Setting up an SSD, not putting OS on it

so once the SSD is in place within the case if I am not putting the OS on it would it still need to be configured through the BIOS or will it just appear as a secondary hard drive

it should just appear

and as shektron linked you will have to format it

might even have to initialise it in disk management before being able to format it
