Is there a way to have a VPN connection permanently put in place on a small home router? A new router could be purchased if necessary but currently we have a Linksys EA (3500? I'll have to double check the specific model since it is offsite) series router. Permanent VPN meaning that clients coming in to connect do not have to use a VPN client like Cisco AnyConnect or Juniper Network Connect. Once connected to the router, clients will automatically be able to access the VPN without any interaction. We are currently using Cisco AnyConnect and I'm not sure if Cisco will limit this type of functionality to their full blow ASA's or if there is another option.

Thanks everyone!

If you work at it hard enough I suspect you can make it work. This is a common thing to do for people that use public vpn services. The big issue is the router must have a vpn "client" mode. You can load third party firmware on many routers to accomplish this. I am too lazy to look your router up.

If you need to buy a new router asus routers that you can load the asus-merlin firmware image on tend to be very easy to setup vpn client.

Now the big BUT is going to be the AnyConnect. Most times this is using IPSEC rather than openvpn like public servers. Cisco also has their own sslvpn implementation. It is actually one of the best I have seen because it does not require the user to load and configure a client. I do not know...

I do not know if any router supports that...I suspect some might because cisco anyconnect is one of the most common vpn used by enterprise customers.

It can work with the ASA but it depends on the configuration of the ASA. It has to be configured to allow one of the vpn types these routers support. I know it works very well with IPSEC but if it is set to only allow sslvpn then it may not.

Yes, check out the ASAS RT88-CU. This has everything built in, including an OpenVPN client (and server if required) which allows multiple VPN profiles to be configured for faster endpoint switching. You can also selectively direct which devices route through the VPN provider, and which go out directly via your ISP unencrypted. Any device which then connects to your router can then benefit of routing it's traffic through the encrypted tunnel.

I would suggest you update the stock ASUS firmware to the Merlin revision.
