I'm quickly putting together a PC with some older components from a previous build (the GPU and RAM) and I'm wondering if the motherboard and CPU are a good pick? Is it worth going for an older i5 perhaps? Keep in mind this is purely for gaming performance.

Case: Corsair carbide series 300R
Mobo: Asus H110M-K H110
CPU: Intel Core I3-7100
Heatsink: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
PSU: Corsair CP-9020098-UK VS Series 650W
RAM: 8GB DDR3
GPU: HD 7870 2GB

Also I want to take the HDD from my laptop and use it for this rig because I can't afford another installation of windows is that possible to do at all? and what would I need cable wise ect. Thank you in advance.

Solution

It's ok pick - cheap one. :)
Of course you can get something a bit better like Gigabyte GA-B250M-D3H.
And yes DDR4 is essential,
DDR3 is not supported on skylake/kaby lake systems (DDR3L is supported on some of 100 series boards).

Would the ASUS PRIME B250M-K be a good pick? and what sort of performance can I expect at 1080p with the HD7870 and the I3-7100? Also is the DDR4 essential or can I just buy some after the rig is working?
