Question about adding a sound card

I'm wondering if it's useless to add a sound card to my motherboard that already has onboard sound.

The motherboard i'm using is the ASUS M5A97 R2.0 http://imgur.com/a/WqYpe and it has 6 (right?) PCI slots. If I am able to add a sound card, which slot would I want to install it in to? I just need to know before I stupidly buy something that wouldn't work or make much of a difference. I have Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's and I can set the frequency up to 192000 Hz in the properties for them. I also use RealTek HD Audio Codecs in case that matters. http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsCheck.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#High Definition Audio Codecs

Sorry, I refer to it by the more common name. It's sold as the Objective2 + ODAC combo. It's made by both JDS Labs and Mayflower Electronics. The design is essentially open source, so you could even make one yourself. Here's an Amazon link:

Here is the Mayflower link:

Never, ever, ever set the frequency over 48000 Hz unless you're playing music for mice.

Now that that's out of the way, you would want to install the sound card to a slot on your desk. Basically, internal sound cards have to deal with power fluctuations that are extremely difficult to keep out of audio. External, powered cards like the O2/ODAC are not subject to those fluctuations, and will give much better results than even the best internal sound cards.

Barring an external unit, you'd want the card to be as far away from the GPU as possible. It's the biggest source of voltage fluctuations in most modern builds.
