My budget is 220$, what is the best CPU + Motherboard combo I can get?

Hello,

My old CPU Q6600 seems to be dying and I am looking into buying a new CPU for my PC. It will mostly be used for CPU intensive gaming, such as military simulations and real time strategy games.

My budget for the upgrade is maximum 210$.

It looks like there are no options for CPU upgrade for the 775 socket, so in the same budget I must also include a new motherboard.

I have looked into there options,
1) I3-4170 + New Motherboard for 150$

2) I3-7100 + New motherboard + 4Gb DDR4 Ram for 210$

3) I5-4460 + New motherboard for 210$

Which one of there would be the best option? Also please suggest any other options you think would be better in my situation.

My current system
CPU: Q6600
GPU: GTX 750Ti
RAM: 4Gb DDR3
Motherboard: Asus P5KC (775)
PSU: 500W

G4560 is almost identical to the i3-6100 as it is a dual core with hyperthreading.

The G4560 is the best idea. It's a major jump in CPU for you, even though it's a dual core w/hyperthreading and not a quad core. It's an amazing value for what it costs. It brings you to the new technology, including ram. And it'll allow for a future videocard upgrade, since it'll pair up nicely with cards far more powerful than your 750 Ti.

Although, if money is tight, getting an older i5, which is a true quad core, and a motherboard that allows you to reuse your old ram would not be a bad idea. You'll want to pick up another 4gb though, and I personally would not want to buy DDR3 at this point in time. So there's that downside.

Hello again,

Thanks for the answers! I went with I3-7100 and the performance is stunning and my system is just flying. So far everything I have managed to test out works 4x or more times better than on my old Q6600.

I may be late but, if you still have your old mobo and CPU lying around you can pop in a xeon processor like this with a mod. It'll rend you around $25US and will probably extend the life of that cpu for a little bit, if you wan't to keep it around and feel like overclocking (seen it reach 4.1GHz). Although, you may need to update the bios and install the microcode for it from here and feel free to check this out if you need some more info.

Interesting option. It looks like that the Xenon is 30% better than the Q6600. Sadly I gave away my motherboard.

But there are 775 motherboards around for 30$ so coupled with this Xenon CPU it would total a 50$ for pretty decent CPU and motherboard setup for multimedia or for browsing and perhaps some light gaming if coupled with some GPU as well.
