You will need 771 to 775 adapter and that is not 100 % safe. Xeon will not give you some extra performance and q9650 will be better choice for you. If you jsut want to have Xeon in your PC just...

Why would you get a xeon for "gaming and a little productivity"? They used to be worth it when you could get a quad core hyper threaded chip with decent clocks for cheaper than an i7, but you cant anymore. I see no E5 xeons I would recommend to a gamer they are all very expensive or clocked at like 1.7ghz.

For a gaming/workstaion I would look at ryzen personally. Do you have any specific use case that requires a xeon? If not i am not sure why you want one, certainly better options.

What motherboard do you have?
What is your budget?
if you want cheaper option, Xeons for 775 socket are old but gold.

If you jsut want to have Xeon in your PC just because its name go for 775 core 2 quad. If you really need it for productivity just get some s1155 quad core Xeon and that differece will be woth. For 500 gbp you can buy it used and match with some newer GPU like rx470/480. If you dont want to buy new mobo then get adapter and Xeon E5450.
