I currenty run an i5-3570 @4.1 GHz paired with an Asus Z77-A mobo and 16gb DDR3 of Vengeance ram @1648Mhz

i have found a used set of i5-6400T on an Asrock H170 Pro4/Hyper with 8GB DDR4 @2133Mhz

should i do the upgrade or not? i mainly ask because i can see in many comparing sites that 3570 is actually slightly faster than 6400T...

Solution
It would be a downgrade.
The T suffix processors are low tdp processors with lower clock rates.
Your 3570 has a passmark rating of 7005 and a single thread rating of 2014.
Actually, I think you have a 3570K since you have overclocked; that would be even higher.

The i5-6400T has a rating of 5557 and single thread of 1520.

As you pointed out, I think that would be more of a side-grade than an upgrade, and perhaps even a little bit slower. You're probably better off sticking with what you have, since the 3570 is still a capable chip, and any of Intel's current mid-range offerings won't be much faster.

thanks a lot, i will stick with what i have, actually i just sold my Asus 1060 6gb dual oc for an MSI 1070 armor so i was looking for some further upgrade within my budget, but looks like intel i-cores are almost all still strong no matter how old they are (?)

There are three specs that determine your gaming performance.

1. graphics card; generally most important for fast action games.

2. Single thread compute capability. This is most important for sims, strategy and mmo type games.
Yes, Intel prevails. Ryzen is coming close though.

3. Number of threads. This is important for multiplayer games with many participants.
Otherwise few games can effectively use more than 4 threads.
Ryzen is very good here with lots of cheap threads.
