Just to make sure if you want to add ram that is different than the other all that matters is that the ram runs at the same MHz? Or is there something else I'm missing.

Solution
May I suggest you buy a 2 stick kit of supported ram so that you can run in faster dual channel mode.
A ram vendor will have an app that gives you supported kits for your pc or motherboard.

If you have a choice, more ram trumps faster ram, If your os is 32 bit, you will be limited to 4gb.

the latency, cl timings do matter too

if for example the old one is cl 1l and the new is cl15, both will run at cl 15

also matters size, some modules with different sizes will not run in dual channel mode

some mainboards are stubborn and will not work with different ram modules, no matter what

the voltage of the modules, be sure that both are 1.5 or 1.3 volts, not mixtures there is a must

sometimes is simpler to buy a ram kit and sell the old ram module

All ram must be managed at the same speed, voltage, and latency.
Even then there may be differences that will not let added ram work.
Most of the time, adding ram will work. But, not 100% of the time.
Best to replace the ram with a single kit of the desired specs.

What is your plan B if adding a stick does not work?

well i currently have 2gb or ram which is horrible since the other 2gb is fried for some reason, just want to add another 2gb. If this does not work ill probably just buy a 1x 4gb stick instead. The one i currenty have is gddr3 (ddr3) which is 2gb and runs at 1333mhz.

Hmmm, might have to look at the voltage too forgot about that.

Oh yha forgot to ask, this is about my laptop memory i accidentally bought ddr3l ram for my laptop and i thought it will support 1.5 and go to 1.5 volts but it stays put at 1.3 then i get a bsod afterwards, anyway i can make the ram use more than 1.3v?

No, it is incompatible.
Return it if you can or sell it if you can't.

Then look at the ram upgrade app on Kingston, crucial, corsair... etc. and enter your laptop make/model
You will get a list of supported ram upgrades.
