the intel i5-7600k processor is one i am looking at purchasing and it is compatible with DDR4-2133/2400 RAM, as the manufacturer's website states. the MOBO i am looking at supports DDR4-3733, 3600, 3200, 2800, 2400/2133, etc - so what happens if i install DDR4-3200, will it not work with this processor? what do these numbers even mean?

Solution
all of those will support the range DDR4-2133 / 2400 / 2800 / 2933 / 3200 / 3600 / 3733
as long as you understand the standard speed is 2133/2400 (set by jentec) and the rest are controlled Overclocking of ram using XMP chip on the ram stick.
so when you build it, it will ruin at 2133/2400 at first until XMP is enable in Bios then a 3000 will run as such speed.
