Okay so I currently have a system up and running that I built at my parents house. But as I am getting closer to college, I want to take my system with me as I go. But the dorm is small and I don't want to bring such a big system. The system is a 6600K (cooler is an AIO liquid-240mm) with a GTX 980 (ATX mobo with an SSD and HDD). I don't wanna just transfer my current hardware into a smaller case, so I was gonna build a shell for and around the 980. I was gonna get a smaller form factor case with one of the new Ryzen CPUs and a micro ATX mobo. Then I was thinking I could just switch the 980 over. And as I began to plan it all out even further I thought it would be great if I could also not have to get another SSD and HDD. So my question is: Am I able to put my current SSD and HDD into a system with mostly different hardware and have it still work? I know the drivers would be different, but is this possible?

Solution
If you move to a different motherboard, you may well have to do a full reinstall of the OS and everything else.

This also may involve Windows activation issues.
