I am planning to get the Evga x299 dark motherboard. Which type of memory should i get for optimal performance?

Also for CAS, is 15-15-15-35 the most optimal number?

Thanks.

So if you need the Pcie lanes x299 could be useful. As others stated the quad cores are pretty much a waste. They are dual channel memory and only 16 pcie lanes.

The 7800x and 7820x are nice chips that offer a few extra pcie lanes and quad channel memory over the 6700k and some more cores. Sad they are still cutting those down to 28 lanes though, so enough for some ssds but not a lot else.

The 7900x finally offers the full lane count of 44 but at 1000 USD it is hard to justify. The higher core counts won't be out for a while.

As others have said, you won't notice any improvement in games over your current setup. But if you want to build a new system anyway, go with the 7800x, 7820x or 7900x with quad channel memory at 3000mhz or higher.
If I understand correctly, it depends on the type of CPU to get. It will determine if it can run in dual or quad channel. I hope this is for working and not just gaming. A Z270 or Ryzen build will work just fine for gaming, even on the heaviest loads.

At the end of the day, I would recommend dual channel as it's bound to work, that's 8GBx2.

I am planning to use this mostly for gaming and autocad. I know this is off topic but what will be the ideal cpu to get for x299 mobo? I am currently using i7-6700k.

Do you need something more powerful than the 6700k? Thats about as good as it gets for gaming, not sure about autocad. I would say the i7 7820x would be your best bet that's a 8 core hyperthreded cpu for 600 dollars the extra core and threads may hep in your cad program, but it would be a complete and utter wast of money for a gamer.

As for ram I would go quad channel since your board supports it and you seem like you want to spend the money, so 4 sticks of 8gb. CL15-15-15-35 is good for say 3600mhz+ ram, less impressive for 3000mhz or below. The best ram in terms of performance will be the sticks that run at very high speeds with low timings.

Just so you are aware, that i7-6700 is perfectly fine for gaming and AutoCAD. Getting the X299 will be overkill, just so you are aware.

Honestly, I think the new platform is a mess right now, until Intel gets their act together, but that's my personal thought. You are probably better off with the X99 platform as it offers better features. If you decide to get the X299, depending on what CPU you get, some features may be disabled.

Well haven't a clue what type of cpu is needed for cad, so I wont comment on that. But I agree, I think going from a 6700k to anything on x299 is a waste of money especially for gaming. The quad core cpu's on x299 do not support quad channel, but going from a quad core chip on z270 to a quad core chip on x299 would be insanely stupid you might as well just set your money on fire. I think x299 is a disaster as well, the existence of quad core lga 2066 chips boggles my mind.
