Merging red Ripjaw X with blue Ripjaw X safe?

Solution
There are various possibilities.

The ideal, would be that it just 'works'.

Some of the potential problems range from being unable to utilize the XMP profiles (as the requirements don't match perfectly - can sometimes be fixed with a slight voltage boost), to some memory error BSOD's and through to an outright failure to post.

"Safe" as in not going to cause damage? Absolutely.

You may run into some issues with 'mixing & matching' RAM - even identical modules that were sold separately (ie not as a 'kit') can be problematic on occassion.

If you must mix & match, try to get the closest module you can - speed & timings. The colour scheme shouldn't matter, they're the same modules with a different colour heat spreader.
