I have a windows 8 key that I am trying to activate on a buddy's computer. (Upgrade from windows XP). He said he bought it second hand and didn't have the password to open windows. So I tooo out the hard drive and formatted it on a different working PC to clear it. Now I hooked up the old HDD and have the USB with windows loaded on it plugged into the computer. When it powers on the message "an operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system".

So I disconnect the HDD and boot off of the USB and it works fine. But when I try to install windows on to the HDD it says it cannot install on the disk.

When I reboot the PC a blue windows screen pops up telling me that my PC needs to be repaired. It says "the boot configuration data file doesn't contain valid information for an operating system".

File: \Boot\BCD
Error code: 0xc0000098

Honestly I am stumped. I need any and all suggestions.

Btw I have installed the windows 8 recovery disk on a delegate USB drive.

Thanks in advance.

Solution
Follow a proper windows installation guide.
Or a guide on repairing the BCD store,if you put the HDD into a different system you can do this pretty easily with the free version of easyBCD.
Your HDD has no boot partition ( ~200mb system/uefi drive) you probably confused the system into thinking that it should boot up from the usb drive.
