Freeing up Space on Hard Drive

Good morning Ladies, Gents!

I currently picked up a decent tower for free and im trying to do some maintence on the machine. I was in the process of trying to move folders from my C drive to the D drive. I was able to move the folder using the properties-location-move option. However after completing the first move all other files that im trying to move no longer have the 'location' tab under properties.

My question is how do I get the 'location' tab back, or is there an easier way to do this?

Solution

Full wipe and reinstall, for several reasons.
This system is totally borked. Start over.

1. Determine if it is two physical drives, or a single drive in two partitions.
Disk Management will show you this. And if possible, post a screencap of that here.

2. Discover your Win 7 license key. Belarc Advisor can probably find this.
Download this onto the HDD, and create a DVD or USB installer. If you have access to a different PC, it makes this much easier.

But first we need to know if it is one drive, or multiple physical drives.

If it is a single physical drive, we will wipe and install the OS on this drive. Delete all the partitions and install.

If it is 2 physical drives...1 x 30GB and 1 x...

It's Windows 7. I haven't done a full wipe because I dont have a windows 7 CD. However when it was given to me, it was just bare bones.. All filles were deleted except some pre-exsisting files such as, steam, documents, pictures etc.

If you have a valid license key, you can get the Win 7 ISO direct from Microsoft.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

And I've seen far too much weird stuff on used systems to trust anyone on that. Them, their friends, the owner before them, etc, etc....

But, to your issue...
Is there a selection for Default location?

Ya the default location (it's actual location) is still the C drive. But the location tab under properties is completely gone

I was successful in moving the downloads folder and when I download stuff it recognizes it's new location and will download items to the D drive however that was the only folder I was able to move

I am unsure of why it is gone, or how to get it back.

For future reference...these steps to relocate those things:

Win 7 & 8: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1834397/ssd-redirecting-static-files.html
Win 8.1 & 10: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2024314/windows-redirecting-folders-drives.html

Those steps were pretty similar to the actions I first undertook. Is it not possible to just click and drag and files that I want to be moved? and if so how do I get the computer to recognize their new location?

Sure you can just copy/paste the files to elsewhere.
But the default save location will be whatever the OS and your applications think it is.

Alright well the real issue is my main drive C is completely full, and it's causing many applications to run slowly (I believe)

So if I copy and paste all files except for the Windows folder, will I be able to delete all other folders to free up the space? Will applications still be able to function?

Don't do that. Many/most of your system will absolutely break.
The OS is much more than just the Windows folder.

Install and run WinDirStat. This may lead you to what is sucking up your drive space.
What size drive is this?

But I still recommend a full wipe and reinstall.

You're downloading it from here:
https://www.fosshub.com/WinDirStat.html

A 30GB C drive.
This will not work. 30GB is far too small. Pretty much no matter what you do, it is too small.
And I'm thinking this drive was never meant to be a standalone drive, but rather a cache drive for the HDD.
Many systems were built like this. Along the way, someone split the two drives, and attempted to use the teeny SSD as the actual OS drive.

This will not work. It is simply too small.

Or, if it is a single physical drive, someone partitioned off a teeny bit for the OS.
But as above...this will not work.

So what do you suggest I do?

The machine is operating right now, im using it as we speak. I have a couple steam games installed including ARK - Survival Evolved and I am able to play that with minor issues, just slows down when something big happens.

If it is 2 physical drives...1 x 30GB and 1 x some large TB...we will take that little stupid thing out completely.
Install the OS on the HDD as above, deleting ALL the existing partitions on it and starting over.

Do you have an email I can send this image to? I am unable to upload the photo to this forum or photobucket
