My homebuilt system is about 4 years old now, and I feel like it's time for an upgrade - looking for recommendations. Primary use is amateur photo/video editing as well as normal Office apps, etc. Also serves as PLEX host.

Current:
I-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz
MB: ASUS P7P55D ATX
Pwr: Cooler Master Silent Pro 700w (SLI cert, Crossfire ready)
RAM: 2x4GB G. Skill F3-12800CL9D (DDR3-1600/ PC-12800)
Video: HIS Radeon HD4670 1GB PCI Express 2.0 x16
OS: MS Windows 10
OS Disk: Transcend 256GB SATA SSD
Other drives - 2 Hitachi Deskstar HD32000 2TB 7200RPM SATA 3
External: WD MyBook 3TB USB3
BLG BluRay burner, LiteOn DVD burner
Added USB3 6 port card
Case: Cooler Master HAF922 Full size tower

System works well, but output rendering is slower than I'd like. Thanks for your suggestions!

Solution
This should work well.

Get a X370 for a 8 core as Ryzen 7, specially if you overclock.
Also 580 is faster than 1060.

I'm using Power Director 15:
"Enable hardware decoding: if your computer supports NVIDIA CUDA/AMD
Accelerated Parallel Processing/Intel Core Processor Family technology, select
this option to use hardware acceleration to decode the video during the
editing process and when producing video."

I would like to add that I disagree about going with an x370 board unless you don't mind laying out the cash because a b350 can overclock just as well you just can't do sli. I chose the Msi
Tomahawk because it has been around the forums that it's memory compatibility is great where some Ryzen boards are still struggling.

In the past, I've generally avoided overclocking in favor of stability, so I tend to agree with you...

Thanks for your suggestions - the RX580 is currently showing out of stock on the SuperBIiz and NewEgg sites.

Thanks - I built this pretty much as spec'd and everything is working well at stock speeds. I do wish I'd looked at the MB specs a little more closely - I could have used a couple more SATA ports (currently all 4 are in use). The other casualty was my IDE-based DVD writer - no IDE port!

The other thing that was a bit confusing is that this MB comes with a rectangular bracket to hold the Ryzen cooler. The particular CPU unit you had suggested comes with a round cooler (there is also a rectangular unit available) and nowhere did it show exactly how to use the Spire cooler with this MB. I removed the clamps from the bracket and screwed the spire cooler into the holes of the mounting bracket. It seemed to work OK, but...

Yeah I should have pointed out only 4 sata ports. This is the first I have heard of trouble mounting the cooler on that board. I am sorry. I have heard of people having trouble with the Asrock pro 4, and it sounds like a similar problem, maybe check out what people did with that board and you might find your answer.I'm glad everything else is working.

Hmmmm... may have spoken too soon! Had 2 freezes tonight after running for about 48 hours; no response to keyboard or mouse; nothing in event logs or reliability; reboots fine... latest BIOS... Will keep an eye on it

That's really good. How is it on load?

I used ProshowGold to render a series of slides and music at 1080p - this used all 16 cores and not the GPU for about 6 minutes. According to resmon, all 16 cores were running at about 50%. Max observed temp was about 41C (105.8F). Temps per AMD Ryzen Master and MSI Command Center

=== update 7/2 ===
Regarding the hangs where there was no mouse or program response - I found in Event Viewer that prior to each of the crashes, DbxSvc had been failing with an error: Failed to connect to the driver: -2147024894, retrying in 1000 milliseconds". After looking around the web, I found a number of people who were having the same problem with this Dropbox service. The consensus was that stopping the service seemed to have no effect on Dropbox, and I have seen no effect on updating, etc. since I stopped it. Of more importance, I've had no system hangs since I stopped it and set it to Manual.

This problem was not occurring prior to the upgrade and Dropbox was not recently installed so I have no idea what triggered this behavior - or why it seemed to fail once a second for 10-12 hours before finally jamming the system.
