I am looking for the most reliable, long-lived, low latency cable modem for live, online teaching and movie streaming. I use Spectrum/TWC, and purchased a new model Asus wireless router, which works very well, in December. I looked at reviews and came up with Motorola MB7220, MB7420, MC7550, and Arris SB6190 and SB6143. However, there are several reports of the Motorolas quitting within one year, and the Arris modems dropping internet connections. Both of these are deal-killers for me. I get up in the middle of the night to teach, when no services or stores are availble if the modem goes out. Can you please recommend a good modem?

Arris bought motorola if I remember correctly the parts of motorola went round and round for a while.

Motorola used to make all the cable modem chipsets, I think most vendor buy from broadcom now. Hard to find quality cable modem anymore. Everyone is trying to cut the prices so they use poorer quality parts assuming people replace their router every couple years. It does not help people who want to buy a quality modem that will last forever....then again docsis 3.1 is coming and going to force a replace by everyone anyway.

The motorola/arris devices are still the primary devices most cable companies themselves provide. They have a extremely low failure rate. No matter what devices you buy they all have some amount of failure...

If it is really that important get the cable company to activate a second modem on your connection. If you talk to their business office most allow you to have the second device for very low cost....but you have to agree to not actually use it unless the main device would fail.

Still it only fixes a failed hardware which is uncommon. If your needs are that important I would look at use a cellular broadband connection as a backup. Many routers can quickly switch over.

I think I will go with Arris. Thanks for the advice and the suggestions. I was thinking about activating a second modem. I will look into broadband. That would be a good alternative for Spectrum, as well as the modem. It looks like they have good speeds for streaming/live video conferencing.

Thanks for the information.
