My local PC store has a factory refurbished GTX 980 for the same price as a 1060. The 980 has 4 gb of ram and the 1060 3gb. I want to run games like BF1, battlefront, and other rather intensive games. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I thought the 980 was the obvious choice but after looking around it seems a lot has changed since I built my PC. My PC specs are as follows:

i5 i think it clocks at 3.4
8gb of RAM
r7 260x (rip)

If it were a 6GB 1060 vs a 980, I'd say the 1060, hands down.
Being the 3GB variant muddies the water a little bit, with the 980 being a little better in some cases.... Overall they still trade blows back & forth. There's no real definitive winner IMO. YMMV depending on specific titles though.

That being said, the 1060 will utilize less power (120W vs 165W) and will come with a full manufacturers warranty. The refurbished 980 will have a limited warranty of some description.

My vote: I'd opt for the 1060 over the 980 (and ideally the 6GB variant if you can afford it).

Leaning closer to a 970, but somewhere in between a 970 and a 980, generally anyway.

Now, that was based on the 6GB card, with the 3GB being a slightly 'crippled' variation on that.... so the gap would likely be a little wider in some cases.

The warranty and power draw would swing it for me though - I guess I wasn't too clear on that in "my vote" before.
The cards are really close..... close enough to look at other factors IMO

Reference GTX 1060 6GB is roughly 95% as fast as a reference 980 in most cases. You overclock the 1060 and it easily pulls ahead.

GTX1060 3GB is missing one of 10 SM units, so is something like 88% as fast as a 980.

I think a proper alternative at this moment is the RX580, assuming you can find one.

Hey guy I really appreciate the answers I want to pose a follow up so within the 90 day warranty that comes with the 980 would it be enough time to find out if anything is wrong with it?

Honestly there isn't a answer to that, because like alot of things, it could fail as to why it was 'refurbished'. But consider you have 3 YEARS on the 1060, and can you in 91 days come up with the cash again to buy another card IF the 980 did fail? That is the questions really.

Otherwise I would use www.pcpartpicker.com and buy a proper (as people suggested and I am a proud owner) of a 6GB 1060 instead.
