I spared no expense on my last pc build, but that was about 6 years ago. I am about to build my son a new desktop, (he is currently using the one I had before my build which would be about 15 yrs old, lol) So wanted some of your expert ideas on the best route to take to upgrade mine and build him a decent pc at the same time. Devin (my son) mainly plays games online such as Road Blox, and Minecraft. So far he never plays graphic intense games. I on the other hand use the pc to do it all including graphic intensive gaming. My current build is:

Gulftown Core i7 980 Extreme
Samsung 850 EVO 500 gb
EVGA X58 3X SLI Classified 3
24 GB DDR3
Last year I added the GTX 980 Ti as GPU

So basically I want to take advantage of the graphics card and really interested in the M.2 SSD's which I cant use with this mainboard. So, is it worth it at this time going full upgrade (not including gpu, of course) on mine? I'd like to use some of my parts to build his and get a decent upgrade for mine at the same time. Any help is greatly appreciated. Budget is not limited, but needs to be worthwhile for the cost.

Okay what I'd probably do is get a 4690k/z97 board for him and something in the 1060/580 range for a gpu and reuse your memory on his rig and probably the SSD.

Build another rig for yourself with the 980ti. And either a 7700k or r5 1600 and ddr4 memory

So what about going with my current mobo for him and I still have 2 580 gtx cards I had running in sli for gpu?

You certainly could. I didn't know about the 580s. In that case by far the easiest thing would be to drop the 580s back in your current rig and give it to him. Take the 980ti and build yourself a setup. I can help with it if you want to share your budget and needs (monitor upgrade(if so what refresh rate and resolution do you have in mind? Keyboard? Mouse?

That would be fantastic. I currently use a Panasonic 46" Plasma for my monitor. I might transfer that to my master bedroom and get a 4k, at least the same size or close. Is there one available with decent refresh for gaming? My keyboard is G110 and I have the 12 button mouse that goes with it. I'm thinking of changing out the mouse because it forces double clicks sometimes and I don't use the extra buttons anyway (I used to use it for an online Star Wars game where I was a sniper.) Thanks for taking the time to help out, I've been out of the loop for awhile because I knew my system would be good for a few years. The budget is not really a concern, but with the boss (wife) that might be a different story, lol. If it's truly worth it and good value for the money, hit me with it.

Add your 980ti and a platter drive that suits your size reqs and you should have a great setup

Today the highest refresh rate on a 4k monitor is 60 hz there are some 144hz in development but not released yet. Your 980ti is okay at 4k but you'll have to turn the eye candy down a bit in top flight titles to maintain really high fps. You can always run this one at 1440 or something if you wanted to keep the fps up on something.

Something like that would be a heck of a monitor.

I like everything except for maybe the case. I'm waiting for the 144hz. I may sell the 980ti, and go with a 1080ti in my new system.
