good cheap overclocking motherboard for X5690

alexsat,

There are 292 systems using the Xeon X5690 in Passmark baselines. I am seeing only 12 system listed showing clock speeds over the standard 3.47 /3.73GHz, the top one being 4466Mhz. All these systems are using the famous EVGA Classified SR-2.

This is speculation, but if the X5690 can be overclocked on the SR-2, it must have an unlocked multiplier. And if that is the case, you might try an experiment on you current system using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. A used EVGA SR-2 can cost $300-400 but XTU is free. I have two HP workstations, a z420 with E5-1660 v2 and a z620 with E5-1680 v2 and the E5-1660 v2 which is 3.7/ 4.0 is currently running all cores at 4.1GHz and the E5-1680 v2 is set to run all cores at 4.1 but in actuality it is running two at 4.1 and the remaining cores at 3.6GHz as it has an automatic current limiter. The 1680 is actually a rare unlocked Xeon, Intel says can run at up to 4.3GHz, but some have run it at 4.4 and 4.6 and that's on the ASUS P9X79.

But, give XTU a try in very small steps and it might work. If it does check the CPU performance using the free trial of Passmark Performance Test and make a note of the single-thread numbers. Watch the temperatures during the test too.

I thought that XTU would not work on processors that can be used in dual systems, but the SR-2 results contradicts that idea. You will know right away is it doesn't work as the sliders to change the core clocks speed will be greyed out. controls but it won't have cost anything.

But, it gives me an idea and I might try XTU on the dual X5680s in a Dell Precision T5500 or the X5677 in a Precision T3500.

What is the use of the proposed system?

Cheers,

BambiBoom
