My rig:
Intel i5 3570
8gb RAM
GTX 960 Strix

I have a Western Digital 1T HDD with the model WD10EZEX-00BN5A0 ATA. I have been noticing that whenever I transfer files from the disk to another or to a usb, the highest usual transfer speed is 2-4 mbps. I have this hard drive for over 2 years but I still have a lot of space left for student, gaming and personal work. I've read that other hard drives also experience this but is there any safe way to increase its transfer speed?

Solution
You are probably limited by the speed of the USB. If you are using USB 2.0, you are capped at 480MBps, but that is the best case scenario. My SanDisk tops out at 10mb while the low end can be at 3.
So matter is how fast your USB drive is capable of writing. And also very important if they are alot of small files vs lot of larger ones. Small files take MUCH longer to transfer than one or two big files even if they both take up the same amount of space.

Most cheap USB flash drives are only capable of 3-10MB/s

I just noticed the transfer speed difference different types of drives. I just recently bought an ADATA 16gb flash drive and transfer speed tops at around 10mbps while regular hdd to hdd partition transfer speed tops at around 160mbps but average is at around 80mbps. Thanks guys for your help :)
