Over the last three or so weeks, my wifi on my laptop has become extremely slow! What should I do?

I have a 2013 Toshiba Qosmio laptop. Had it for three and a half years. Up until 3 weeks ago the wifi adapter in it (atheros ar956x) worked great! I have 40 down and 5 up internet.

Last month I went on a trip and used my phone to usb tether since that was the only internet I had there. Ever since I've come back from the trip though my internet has been extremely slow! I get maybe between 1 to 3 Mbps down and same up.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the WLAN driver. I tried disabling and reenabling the adapter. I unplugged and plugged back in the router. I've tried everything I can think of but the performance is still the same.

So I'm wondering, what is the problem? I have windows 8.1 64 bit btw. Could the adapter have been damaged going through x-rays at the airport or just natural wear and tear? Could usb tethering the phone have had an adverse effect on the speed? What can I do? I need to use/keep this laptop for at least another year before I upgrade. Thank you very much everyone.

Also forgot to mention a couple weeks ago when I got back but before I hooked it back up I took my laptop into a computer place to get it cleaned/dusted out. Could that have affected anything? If the card is bad, what is the best usb 3.0 wifi adapter I can get that'll hopefully use as little of resources (cpu/ram/etc) as possible? Thanks.

You can also just replace the card with a newer mini PCI WiFi card. Not sure what else you can try aside from replacing the card if you don't want to check the antenna. Of course replacing the card means you need to disconnect the antennas anyway. If you want an external card to try, that depends on how much you want the card sticking out. Best ones will have an external antenna and the smaller ones may not be any better signal than yours...

Any other solution? It's also not getting as good of a connection as it used to. I used to fluctuate between 4 and 5 bars now from the same spot I usually only get 3 very rarely 4 bars.
