I recently switched internet providers and got different speeds, from, 5 Mbps upload to 3.5 upload and 20 download to 35 download, my question is this enough to still run games like Dota WOW League and games of that sort? The internet is over a dish type system, and my pc specs are 8 GB'S of DDR3 ram I5 2500K and a AMD R9 380.

Yeah i know that struggle. It is sad the US is so far behind the rest of the world in almost everything. If that is your only option, i guess there isn't much point in talking about it further.

But nah unless it is closed by a moderator for a rules violation or something like that, it will stay open forever.

You can play those games on an old ADSL connection (256kb up/ 512kb down). The issue is lag and packet loss. With a dish system there will be significant lag and packet loss. Lag as in high ping, not as bad as satellite service but much worse than a directly wired connection. You are at the mercy of atmospheric conditions, so if it is a rainy day you might have bad internet.

I do thank you for the quick response and I must ask though, if it's just one person on the internet gaming will that help it at all and when you say worse, I use to have cable but will it be unplayable?

Wouldn't internet provided by a dish be satellite internet? What else would the dish be communicating with? Your download an upload speeds are more than enough for gaming. The problem with satellite internet is there is a ton of latency since you have to send a signal to a satellite in orbit and back. What is your ping in something like speedtest.net?

Yeah thats really bad sorry to say, more than a half second of latency. You will likely experience a lot of issues in online games. In a multiplayer fps game such as bf1 you wouldn't even be able to get into a sever with a ping like that, it would automatically boot you. Not sure about games like dota and league.

No not always. I live in a rural area of West Virginia and we have a dish service here but it is sending and reciving from a nearby mountain top. Thankfully a few years ago they ran optic up here. Before that all we had to choose from was dialup, ADSL and shortrange dish. The prices of our slow net is astronomical though, my 20 down/ 15 up connection cost $130 a month. The good thing is that it is indeed the full 15 up so I can stream and upload without much issue.

Would it also depend upon the PC used during the speed test? I guess it's a wait and see, I don't have the system I mentioned hooked up to the internet now I have a old PC on it right now.

Not really unless we are talking 80's era computers. Ethernet speed of 100Mbs is much faster than most internet and faster than what you have. Although the network stack is handled by the CPU in most cases, even super old 433 mhz celerons can do 100Mbs easily on a windows 98 pc.

That is just the hardware side of it. If you plug it in and it starts downloading torrents and stuff, yeah that will have an effect on the ping.

If you don't mind me asking SinaxarKnights what kind of ping do you get just out if curiosity, and may I also ask does it depend on the games you play as well for ping to vary?

Well I have a 2ms ping in speedtest.net, I have very fast cable internet and my ISP's server is only a few miles away. Yes the ping will change based on the games you play or more accurately the specific sever in the games you play assuming they are using dedicated servers. In that case your ping will depend on how far away said sever is from you, so in a game your ping would likely be even higher than it is in speedtest.net. In a peer to peer server your ping will depend on how far away you are from the person who is hosting the server.

I would like to tell you some of my new findings, as well as another simple question. The PC i'm on now has 6GB of ddr2 ram a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 with a ATI Radeon HD 2400PRO now I played on a wow server that's not retail with the server in a different country, and got 1012 ms latency. however I saw 10 fps and the game ran smooth with the exception of the bad gpu making the fps 10. So my last question is does the number of players playing a particular game or on that server as you impact the ping and latency numbers or am I good, meaning it will not vary much more.

The most distant server I can use on speedtest.net (which is fairly nearby, only a few states away) shows a ping of 9ms. It will usually only vary enough to be a problem if your network is too slow to handle bandwidth requirements of the game. At 1000 ping you are an entire second behind, this usually manifest as rubberbanding.

What is the weather like though? Try it when you get some heavy rain or snow.

The weather today is misty on and off light rain, however once I get my other PC here it will be able to test if the internet is really trash or not, it's through huges net., the best provider in the area with the others being only dial up, but I guess I will wait and see, I have the second best package I must also add. I must also ask will the form be closed if left with out a solution for a while or not until the solution is picked.

Sorry for the long delay of writing back to you on this topic, I wanted to share what I found about the internet, my internet speeds and ping play wow fine wroth 700 max ms, about 2 hours of game play use roughly 400 megabits, which is fine I get 30 a month for 70 dollars not the best price but it's what ever however, last night I was up to 500 megabytes last night then had some friends over and watched 2 movies and some YouTube news channels and when I looked it used 3.3 gigabytes of internet, I never knew it used so much, but anyway thank you to all that have responded to my post it was much appreciated.
